Stage One: The Story Often Arrives Before the Script

Before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set, someone has already chosen which story is worth the bet. Following a few hits backward often turns up a book at the start reel-shorts.com/series/the-breaking-point-of-love of the chain. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child, is adapted from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort released Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series drawn from a novel by Cora Reilly. In Korea, a web novel and webtoon are the basis for the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating. With several app owners also running reading businesses, source material stays close at hand: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Writers turn to reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama when no book exists. The script has a single job: to condense a long drama story into scenes that each deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

It is at the casting stage that the format’s economics surface on screen. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep repeating the same names. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman led two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. A lead with a following on one app arrives at the next title with a head start, which matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox runs a production team in Los Angeles. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so studios are also casting with a specific viewer in mind.

Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

TheWrap reports that a Western short drama typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is similar, putting $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. When a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic comes to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported smaller numbers still, with Jiuzhou Culture putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets, Jiuzhou also said, about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. Because dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Cutting to 60–100 Seconds

Framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone, the footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room. An episode that short has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is built around a question that the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time is what a 70-episode series adds up to when those segments are stacked together. Episode counts vary widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Because ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Editors are, in other words, cutting video dramas for multiple screens at the same time.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

The final creative call doubles as a commercial one. TheWrap describes a standard model in which the first eight to ten episodes are free. ReelShort’s own blog sets its free run at usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes unlock with coins, and ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; otherwise, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. What your store shows may be different, since prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the contentious part, because paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. It is best to avoid coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall, as they are unofficial.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Made Series

The newest stage of production eliminates the camera completely. ReelShort now carries animated motion comics that run alongside its live-action library. The Lost Heir, a 58-episode family saga, tracks Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series carries the same name, and the two should not be confused. DramaWave has gone furthest: according to 36Kr, more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated, and the same outlet also reported that the app’s annualized revenue exceeded $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line

Traditional studios have taken note, and the most obvious example is Fox Entertainment. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Fox also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Quick Glance

The logic of the business snaps into focus once the stages are placed side by side. The shoot is the expensive, fixed block, and much of the rest is planned around it. Scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting leans toward known faces, and the edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The typical time and cost at each stage are summed up in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. If no reliable number has been published, the table notes that instead of guessing.
